Building Partnerships
Our partnerships endeavoured to ground legal strategies in such community initiatives by bringing together the strengths of community groups, social workers, locally based lawyers and PLD. This enables social workers/ community organisations to gain legal skills, integrate field-based applications of law as part of their community work, while exposing lawyers to social realities and providing them an opportunity to collaboratively design strategies that are grounded in the social contexts. Examples of field-based applications include maintenance of case records by crisis intervention groups, maintenance of consent forms and compromise agreements; developing skills and processes for mediation and legal counselling, writing of first information reports; and conducting rights education. Such collaborations effectively enable integration of law into social justice initiatives.
