Strengthening Capacities
We conduct residential training programmes to build and strengthen capacities on law, gender and human rights. The training programmes provide continuing education to activists and practitioners in social work, law and academia. They can be broadly categorised into three types, to distinguish each on the basis of their primary focus, although a single training may combine elements of all three.
§ law, society and social justice
§ feminist perspectives on law and human rights
§ on the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW)
Our trainings are a mix of theory and practice to help build an understanding of law that is informed by social realities and can be applied in diverse social justice initiatives. They aim to sharpen critical perspectives of law, focussing on legal skills and strategies that advance social justice goals. Our capacity-building initiatives necessarily combine participants from different sectors. This, in our experience, is vital to facilitating cross-sectoral learning between community groups/ social workers, academics and lawyers – enabling skill sharing and perspective building. This approach has been successful in creating paralegals as a force that can integrate law into community action and advocacy
Typically residential, the trainings are spread over five days. Discussions are facilitated by a resource pool of human rights law practitioners. The learning is facilitated through a combination of methods that include: discussions and sharing in small groups as well as in plenary, resource inputs during sessions, readings, role plays and films. Resource packages, compiling accessible reading material are prepared for trainings to correspond to the course structure, and every workshop is followed by a report that synthesizing the discussions and learning points. In addition to holding a schedule of training events, we conduct workshops or workshop sessions on request for organizations, statutory bodies and the state institutions.
